BusinessDesk

Business journalism and market information · New Zealand · Established company

A large archive of business journalism made genuinely discoverable: search and recommendation that understands queries and article context, not just keywords.

Years of articles, company coverage and journalist profiles, sitting as inventory almost no reader reaches.

The situation

BusinessDesk holds a large and growing archive: articles, market information, company coverage and journalist profiles. The value of an archive like that compounds, but only if readers can find their way into it.

Keyword search does not do that well. A reader looking for coverage of a company, a sector move or a theme is asking a question that keywords answer only by accident.

What we built

We built AI-powered search and recommendation that goes beyond keyword matching: understanding what a user’s query actually means, and understanding article context well enough to judge what else is related, surfacing journalist profiles and market pages alongside articles.

It was integrated into the existing platform as a user-facing feature rather than bolted on as a separate search page.

The outcome

Five-plus years of accumulated coverage became reachable. Readers are connected to relevant articles and related content at the point where they are already reading, rather than having to know what to search for.

The tool has been live in production since 2023 and is still running today: the kind of quiet, multi-year uptime that is itself evidence it works.

Let’s work out what is worth building.

Thirty minutes, no deck, no discovery phase. If it is not worth building, we will say so.
